Whatever happened to the ultrasonic washing machine? I remember watching an episode of "Beyond 2000" (yeah, it was a long time ago) which featured an ultrasonic washer made in Japan-- required only water and electricity (less than traditional machines).

Beyond 2000 mentioned that there was no need for detergent because of the ultrasonic mechanism, but detergent manufacturers were busy at work devising schemes for "fragrances".

OK, I am happy to say that a bit because of poverty a bit because of my concern about this precise topic, I am pretty good about all of these except the detergent and the dry cleaning... I always do a cold wash (30C), brief cycle...

The sun, however, isn't always a good thing for the clothes unless you can ensure uniform exposure. Otherwise, you get areas which are lighter than others-- banding, depending on how the clothes are hung, and you can just generally ruin your clothes... Which I have done by forgetting about my stuff in the sun... So when I dry a lot in the summer, I try to use a very lightweight screen over the top of the rack that lets temperature through but not direct harsh light!

High spins can also ruin your clothes (shrink them), so be careful with anything you care about. Of course for sheets and towels, the max is good. I have a Miele. Unfortunately, the BRIEF cycle is still over 1 hour long...The regular cycle is almost 2 hours...
